The journey begins. More like a drawing, than a plan. The pencil crosses the paper lightly at first. Gradually the lines grow deeper, forming shapes and outlines. A picture forms as the lines darken. Not the plan we imagined. The pencil seemly dances on its own and all at once the outline is finished. Neglected, the pen lays rooted to the table. This plan works only in pencil. Then, the plan changes. Portions are scrubbed away. Eraser shavings are brushed aside and tumble to the floor. The pencil begins again…
There are four of us and our fur baby. In order of age, not beauty, and not counting dog years, we are Matt, Lorina, Kayla, Mason, and Digby.
We love travel, love nature, and often muse on how we would love to road school, but we’re settled. We home school, have a career, a routine, and great friends. We have all the little things that make us comfortable walking our little path, to our little home, in the corner of our little world.
Then one day near the end of 2017, we were presented with a choice. An opportunity to alter our path. One way was familiar, secure, and safe. The other was steeped in mystery, obscure, and unknown.
Over the course of eleven months we downsized from the home we had known for twelve years, trusted the universe, and following in the footsteps of those who’d gone before us, pointed our wagon West!…err, East!
We left the comfort of our settled home and set out Roamsteading. Like modern day pioneers and with scarcely the trappings of a plan, we wonder the arid plains. We sow the distant fields for a crop of new experiences, search for the treasure of new friendships, and marvel in the bounty of new memories on the American road.
Thank you for joining us on our journey!
